The Review

This one is different - and different is good. Beardfish are a crazy new band whose first release is a 2 cd fun-fest. This band sounds like a combination of Spock's Beardish new prog sound mixed with hard edged Black Bonzo-ish organ sound mixed with Gentle Giant quirkiness and Zappa weirdness. But don't worry - it is all very melodic and pleasing - not too much of any one influence. That is actually what makes this release great. *****

Both discs are equally fantastic, and each song is different from the next. A song by song review would be impossible on this one. You have wonderful organ which sounds straight out of 1972 and some unbelievable piano and e-piano throughout this album. The singer is amazing - and demonstrates a very wide vocal range and variety of singing. Did I also mention some jazziness? You will find that also on this release as the band is not afraid of jazzy interludes. Long songs, short songs, crazy songs, serious songs. They all are incredible - not a bad track on this album. That is saying a lot for an album with over 110 minutes! Guitar sound varies between hard edged (70's sound, of course) to acoustic to jazz to psychedelic. Damn this cd is good. Because it is so different it will take some time to grow - but it is one of the best cds of 2005 and a big surprise for me as I had never heard of these guys. I really hope we see a lot more where this came from. Wow. Highest recommendation for anyone looking for new, different prog that is unlike anything anyone else is doing right now. I really loved Frogg Cafe's new one - and I guess they are the closest band that comes to mind when trying to state what this sounds like - but this is even better.

Rating: 5 stars (my first)
