The Review

Tony Levin has returned with the rest of Peter Gabriel's original band (Larry Fast and Jerry Marotta)and Tony's brother Pete Levin on keyboards, also with Jesse Gress (Todd Rundgren's guitarist) forming Tony's own band. And what a band this is! "Resonator" rocks! Opening with the heavy atmospheric rocker "Break It Down" they lay out the framework for the rest of the CD. For the first time Tony sings lead vocals! I was expecting a CD of mostly instrumental tracks as with his previous CDs, so I was surprised to find vocals on nearly the entire CD! Every song on this CD is great in it's own right. "Throw The God A Bone" has a blues feel with rather humorous lyrics (a fun track for live performances). Also interesting is the vocal version of "Utopia" an intstrumental anthem from one of his previous CDs. I tend to view it as a continuation. "Shadowland" is a brilliant instrumental track written by the entire band. "What would Jimi Do?" is a great track inspired by the legend of Jimi Hendrix. This CD really has it all and every track adds something to the entire work. Jesse Gress is a fantastic guitarist who I have seen perform with Rundgren's band in concert and I absolutely love his playing. Tony's brother Pete is a great jazz pianist that also adds alot to this band. And what can you say about Larry Fast and Jerry Marotta? They are legends in my book. Tony of course, who has remained with Peter Gabriel all these years, as well as being an important occasional member of King Crimson, is the brains and the fingers that lead the band. A very exciting, fun and interesting work that really resonates. - Russ Bellinger April 2006
