The Review

Re-released to coincide with Water’s solo tour of the world, “Flickering Flame” proves that Waters hasn’t lost his muse completely. The best tracks from three solo albums and the live album “In the Flesh” comprise this set ( the soundtrack album “The Body” and live “The Wall” are ignored). Including two unreleased demos, a brand new song (the title track) and a cover of Dylan’s “Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door” hardly comprises a new album but for those Floyd fans starved for new product this might suffice. The material ranges from brilliant to incompetent. Like his compatriot David Gilmour’s recent solo album the sum of the parts are greater than the whole. ***

Opening with a completely unnecessary and poorly thought out cover of Dylan’s classic song from the“Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid” soundtrack Waters stumbles again with “Too Much Rope” from Waters’ “Amused To Death”. The concluding track from “Radio KAOS” and that album’s best song “The Tide Is Turning” (which Waters wisely added to the live album “The Wall” a perfect fit if there ever was one) picks up the slack with an involved, intelligent observation about the state of the world. The title track “Flickering Flame” sounds like a bad Dylan knock off. A demo for the soundtrack album “When the Wind Blows” “Towers of Faith” regains the momentum of “Tide” and the outstanding track “Radio Waves” from the uneven “Radio KAOS” continue s to pick up the slack. It’s a sharply written rock song with a great performance. The relatively optimistic (for Waters) “Each Small Candle” drawn from “In The Flesh” captures the grandeur of Waters’ Floyd work with its stinging guitars courtesy of blues guitarist Doyle Bramhall II and the former Thin Lizzy guitarist Snowy White (who can create the sonic texture of David Gilmour quite well as evidence from the “In The Flesh” CD and video) a stunning backing vocal arrangement. ***

Overall cherry picking the strongest tracks from Waters’ post-Floyd career coupled with a sprinkling of rarities makes for one of his strongest solo albums as well. With the recent release of Waters’ “Ça Ira" a contemporary classical recording written but not performed by Waters, it's unlikely that he'll be releasing any new rock music in the immediate future. Either way this new collection will be a tonic for the soul of the starved Floyd and/or Waters fan. The only complaint is that this disc can't be played on computers due to copy protection. For those who love their iPods and/or MP3 players you'll be out of luck. Overall a solid overview of Waters' post-Floyd career.
