The End Records always has some interesting artists that
sound like nothing you have ever heard. Age of Silence is
an example. Drawing from darker-edged bands like Winds and
Arcturus, these guys are an avant-garde metal supergroup consisting
primarily of members of the black metal scene. The vocals
are all clean, however - so no worries for those who cannot
tolerate. The music is impossible to characterize - but it
is all very dark, angular, minor-chord-filled, and strangely
melodic. Heavy at times, mainly guitar driven, but with keys
always present - usually in the form of evil strings or piano.
The melodies are so unique that it takes some getting used
to. The vocals are the standout element to me - as they also
are not what you would expect. Monotone sounding at first
- you see after repeated listens that they are actually layered
very well and fit the evil-sounding music.
The subject matter is also bizarre - the songs are actually
about goings on in an office setting but with a sickly-weird
feeling dominating the vague wording. Basically - if you like
Winds, Borknagar, or Arcturus, this one is a no brainer. I
love it - it is very complex, but at the same time listenable.
This is the kind of stuff that draws you in more and more.
Beware - this kind of music gets addictive...
