Listening to Norwegian formation Airbag their debut
CD I cannot imagine that another band than Pink Floyd will
come to your mind as their main source of inspiration and
at some moments it even sounds as David Gilmour is their
secret guest musician! But to me this doesn’t sound as a
problem because the eight compositions are very tastefully
arranged and contain lots of strong and subtle musical ideas
and I am delighted about the wonderful, often emotional
vocals. In general the climates start dreamy and spacey
with electronic sounds (Prelude and How I Wanna Be), soaring
keyboards and sensitive electric guitar work, then the sound
turns into slow rhythms with pleasant organ waves, slow
synthesizer flights (Safe Like You) and intense Gilmourian
guitar runs, topped by warm, slightly melancholical vocals,
a very compelling experience! Half of the tracks culminate
in bombastic final parts with howling guitar solos, lush
organ and emotional vocals, often drenched in the Seventies
Pink Floyd tradition like Steal My Soul, Colours (very moving
guitar solo) and Sounds That I Hear (wonderful Gilmourian
solo with organ). -
But it’s not only Pink Floyd on this album, Airbag
blends their sound also with progressive pop bands like
Radiohead, Coldplay and Nineties Porcupine Tree, this results
in simply structured but very pleasant head-and-tail songs
that sounds like a kind of 'Pink Floyd Light'. And that’s
not meant cynically but as a compliment because in my opinion
at this moment many people wants to hear good music with
emotion that appeal to their moods, let them feel fine and
take them away from their problems and the insecurity of
recent times … for a while.
