The Review

Leave it to ex-Deep Purple guitarist Ritchie Blackmore to humbly address a mid-life crisis by dumping rock and roll for a medieval rock format. The band led by Richie and his vocalist wife Candice Night (recently crowned Shrewsbury Pa Faerie Magazine festival queen) have been on the European scene playing festivals and regular gigs completely out of scope US audiences so this live DVD is likely to be the only chance people in the states will have to see what this has all been about. Blackmore's midi-acoustic guitar solo opens the outdoor gig which was filmed in front of a festival audience in 2004 in Germany. The ensemble at its best when doing wood flute introduced ballads such as "Cartouche" and "Ghost of a Rose". I have to admit it's a bit surprising to see Richie Blackmore take on a jig or reel (which is second nature to say Richard Thompson) but he's no less nimble fingered and he really appears to have a strong connection to the genre he's now working in. At times the group occupies an unusual niche of Gypsy music, modern Fairport Convention and light rock. Blackmore even renders two Deep Purple classics for fans albeit in a different arrangement. Disc One contains a lead guitar spotlight on the "Village on the Sand" completely with multi-angle filming to get a close look at the guitar master wielding his cherished axe in one of the few pieces that sports a memorable lead solo. The behind the scenes special goes into great detail with the crew on the daunting task of setting up the gigs in actual castles which many have no power (so they bring their own power supply). Accompanying backing music for this section included an odd cover of Jethro Tull's "Rainbow Blues" which works quite well in fact. Disc Two goes further into the band's catalogue spotlight material from various live performances. Also important to note is Blackmore's detailed sessionography from his early days which clearly follows his travels into the early line-up of Deep Purple. Overall the DVD serves as a curious document of a popular trend in mainland Europe that has not transferred to the states quite yet. -
