Review |
It has been several years since we might have coined him
a one hit wonder for his beloved catchy hit "Salt in my Tears,"
but the guy that led the way in the embryonic days of MTV
with his melodic rock breakup anthem has been quite active
over the years. Having worked with other AOR artists such
as Mick Jones & Dann Huff, as well writing hit songs for NSYNC,
Pat Benatar, Gregg Allman, and Celine Dion among others; the
guy has had a string of success, and more power to him, these
are big names. ***
Now it's his turn again to have his own voice again and
his latest release 'It Comes in Waves' adheres to his singer/songwriter
musical endurance that he has led; yes maybe his days of rocking
out are behind him, but let's face it the tunes on 'Waves…'
still covey catchiness and his voice still remains recognizable
after all these years. The record has it's personal moments,
expressing cynicism with the lyrically clever "Church of Disney,"
conveying balladry on the midnight blues oriented "The Massage"
and the title track, as well as executing plenty of acoustic
pop on tracks like "Big Sun," "That Song," and the beatnik
folk of "In The Dim Light of a Brand New Day."***
The songs on this record have all the hooks that pop
songs need, but are mostly mellow, sorry, there aren't any
real rockers on here, but nevertheless, 'It Comes in Waves'
is a good representation of Briley's work as a musician and
songwriter, he can still write the good tunes, that's for
sure. In the end, it's good to hear him again after all these
years.***
