This Italian five piece band was founded in the late
Nineties, in 2000 they released their eponymous debut album
but not until 2009 Filoritmia came up with a successor entitled
Passagi. In general the sound is harder-edged and compelling
progrock. Although the keyboards are tastefully and varied
(powerful Hammond organ, fat synthesizer flights and sparkling
piano runs) the focus in on the heavy guitar work: from
raw guitar intro’s to lots of fiery and biting solos, often
in captivating interplay with the piano (reminding me of
other new and interesting Italian formation VIII Strada).
In the final composition Manifesto I notice a subtle blend
of Deep Purple’s classic Smoke On The Water, no coincidence!
We can also enjoy some more mellow tracks and parts like
the alternating and exciting Senza Sale and the bluesy L’Uomo
Che Torna (intricate atmosphere with inspired Italian vocals).
But after 65 minutes I conclude that on this new Filoritmia
album it’s mainly Heavy Prog, layered with powerful heavy
guitar work. I needed a few listening sessions to get into
this CD but then I started to appreciate it more and more.
Now I hope we don’t have to wait another nine years
for a successor! Rating: 3 of 5 Stars! [3 of 5 Stars!]
