Review:
|
“Genesis was my first love and it will be my last”! Halfway
the Seventies I was converted to the fascinating sound of
the Seventies symphonic rock bands, the album Live by Genesis
was my first experience in that genre: I was blown away by
the captivating blend of classical, folk, rock and symphonic,
from dreamy parts with 12-string acoustics guitars and flute
to bombastic eruptions with fiery guitar runs and lush Hammond
organ and Mellotron, topped by Peter Gabriel his unique vocals
and the inventive Collins/Rutherford rhythm-section, unsurpassed
progressive music in my opinion! And now there is that huge
box set featuring the Genesis studio albums between 1970 and
1975 (each CD contains bonus material, ranging from interviews
to video footage) and a small but wonderful booklet that also
hosts a bonus CD and a bonus DVD.***
The studio CD’s: In 1985 I bought the first edition of
the (pretty expensive) Genesis CD releases, because of this
box set I have compared the sound of those earliest CD releases
with the brandnew CD releases in this Genesis 1970-1975 box
set. Well, I am blow away, what a difference, everything sounds
more clear, more balanced and more dynamic, from Peter his
emotional voice and the soaring Hammond organ in Looking For
Someone to the heavy sound in The Knife and the choir-Mellotron
drops on Selling England By The Pound sounds even more majestic!
Especially the restoration of the album Trespass is impressive
but I am mostly delighted about the ‘new’ sound on The Lamb
Lies Down, time to present this on the forthcoming ‘classic-line-up-tour’,
haha!***
The DVD’s: For me the most interesting DVD footage is
on The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway because of the often awesome
complete original slide show (especially In The Cage, Lilywhite
Lilith and Ravine), embellished with great pictures and even
some mindblowing 8 mm camera footage like on Fly On A Windshield
(entirely with video footage:goose bumps, so compelling with
the volume pedal driven guitar runs and mighty Mellotron waves!),
In The Cage (only in the final part), Anyway , The Colony
Of Slippermen (first pictures than exciting 8 mm shots with
Peter Gabriel and his weird slipperman costume) and Riding
The Scree. The Extra delivers Melody – French TV 1974, an
inspired live performance by the band but the apart from Peter
Gabriel his masks and costumes the visuals in this tv special
are a bit mediocre. The Selling England By The Pound DVD contains
the Shepperton Studio 1973 recording, in those days not approved
by the band for legal sale but meanwhile it became the ultimate
bootleg video/DVD footage that captures Genesis at their artistic
pinnacle, especially Watcher Of The Skies, The Musical Box
and Supper’s Ready are timeless jaw-dropping symphonic rock
compositions with legendary stage antics by Peter Gabriel,
unsurpassed magical moments in the progrock history! Also
interesting are the more raw Bataclan 1973 concert footage
with a heavy Genesis during The Knife (Selling DVD) and the
Rock Of The Seventies 1972 gig in Belgium (Foxtrot DVD), to
me it looks like Peter Gabriel is inspired by The Who and
The Doors, liberated of his ‘upper middle-class stiff upper-lip
education’.***
The booklet: it contains the original cover art of all
albums, beautiful pictures of the band and members, album
stories and explanations by Tony Banks and Peter Gabriel about
the extra tracks (CD bonus) like the BBC Nightride 1970 recordings
and Genesis Plays Jackson demo 1969 (captivating embryonal
versions of The Fountain Of Salmacis, Anyway and The Musical
Box). The DVD bonus contains the NBC Studios (USA) Midnight
Special with very close shots on Peter Gabriel during the
two songs Watcher Of The Skies and The Musical Box (goose
bumps again, perhaps the most compelling progrock drama ever
performed on stage!), it’s very interesting to compare these
two songs with the renditions of the Shepperton video footage
because of the different camera positions and the atmospheres.
My conclusion about this box set: “a Genesis freak’s wet
dream”!
