This formation is rooted in 1974, they started as a
trio, one year two members were added but unfortunately
Il Cerchio D’Oro only released 3 singles in the late Seventies.
In 1999 the Italian progrock label Mellow records released
a CD with 12 unrecorded tracks from the mid-Seventies and
in 2005 the label Psych-Out released a LP entitled La Quadratura
Del Cerchio. It contains 9 unreleased recordings (including
original material and covers of Le Orme, New Trolls and
The Trip). In 2006 Il Cerchio D'Oro was reformed and released
their first studio album in 2008, a concept album entitled
Il Viaggio Di Colombo, the line-up features all original
members.***
What a wonderful lay-out: a fold-cover with sketches
that take you away to the time that Columbus set sail to
America and met the native Indians, a meeting between two
different worlds. On this first studio album in their long
history Il Cerchio D’Oro sounds melodic and accessible in
the 13 alternating songs with passionate Italian vocals
and at some moments a Classic Italian Progrock climate (like
in the bonustrack Futuro Prossimo). A strong point in their
music is the way they colour their tasteful arrangements
with strong and varied work on guitar and keyboards: the
one moment a slow rhythm with sensitive electric guitar
or a dreamy atmosphere with 6 – and 12-string acoustic guitars,
the other moment a mid-tempo with swinging piano or a bombastic
atmosphere with powerful organ and fat synthesizers flights.***
I cannot mention absolute highlights but on this new
CD Il Cerchio D’Oro has very tastefully arranged the 13
compositions (lots of shifting moods and nice musical ideas),
especially the work on guitar (2 members play acoustic -
and electric guitar and the bass player also 12-string acoustic
guitar) and keyboards gives Il Viaggio Di Colombo an extra
dimension.***
