Review:

With two previous albums under their belt, these natives of Chicago are about to unleash this brand new monster on an unsuspecting world. Their cocktail of Lacuna Coil gothic alt metal drive, L' Âme Immortelle industrial groove, Madonna electro pop fizz and Brittany Bindrim’s smouldering looks, hot enough to trigger nuclear fusion, has produced a formula that should shift units faster than Usain Bolt with his pants on fire. They make their intensions perfectly clear with opening trio of dance floor fillers best listened to with lasers, strobe lights and stimulant of choice, or failing that, try Smarties and getting your mate to switch your lights on and off very fast. Pounding rhythms, lashing crunchy guitars, cavorting sequencers and growling synths collide in an orgy of gratuitous groove, exemplified by the raging ‘Ammunition’ (video on Female Voices Blog). Other faves include the strutting ‘Worth the Wait’, the galactic ‘Mothership’ and the tribal/martial ‘Shattered’. In total contrast, the emotional orchestral ballad ‘The Shake’ shows a completely different sensitive side to the band. Brittany’s vocals range from Cristina Scabbia to Madonna, at times it can be quite uncanny. The limited edition comes with a second disc of mainly remixes, but it does have two outstanding new songs. ‘Hallowed’ is an awesome swinger that recalls Muse’s fantastic ‘Supermassive Blackhole’, and the atmospheric ‘I Want it All’ is a real dream of a song. Why they are not on the main album goodness only knows, a cynic might say it’s to get people to splash out the extra cash. The only downside is the artwork which looks like a child’s attempt to do something in the style of Edvard Munch’s The Scream, very odd. It is perhaps no surprise that their music has gone down so well on the European mainland, especially Germany, and they are on a Belgian record label. This new album should see them taking over the rest of the world with their massive crossover appeal, music for the head and feet and for rockers and popsters alike, a raving 9 out of 10.
