Review:

Index is a Brasilian four piece formation that was founded in 1998. After 3 studio-albums entitled Index (1999), Liber Secundus (2001) and Identitade (2005), the band has released a live DVD in 2008, that year recorded in their country featuring guest musicians Kléber Vogel (from Quaterna Réquiem) on violin and Rafael Gubert (from Akashic ) on vocals. -

Index their (mainly instrumental) sound is a very pleasant and melodic blend of jazzrock, jazz, rock, classical and symphonic rock: the one moment dreamy delivering soaring flute play, sensitive electric guitar with delicate use of volume pedal and mellow organ work, the other moment a mid-tempo with rock guitar and fat synthesizer flights or swinging with jazzy piano. The interplay is awesome, the rhythm-section plays adventurous and we can enjoy lots of strong solos on guitar and keyboards along bass (in Maximus and Instantes) and drums (very dynamic in Quaterna Réquiem). To me the sound of the flowing guitar and ‘churchy’ Hammond organ evokes the mellow side of ‘Dutch pride Focus’ in tracks like Eduardo, Corações Do Mundo and Quaterna Réquiem, wonderful and very compelling. In two tracks Index have invited guest musicians: in the strong and varied Guernica Em Nova York it’s singer Rafael Gubert and in Quaterna Réquiem it’s violinplayer Kleber Vogel, member of famous Brasilian progrock band Quaterna Requim, he delivers excellent work and gives a strong classical undertone to the music. He also contributes in the bonus track Fogos De Santelmo with his version of JP Ponty his song Rhythm Of Hope, very beautiful in a great jazz rock atmosphere! The other extras on this DVD are a discography, photo album and the making of this DVD. -

A fine DVD to discover, especially if you like jazzrock.
