Review:

After popping onto the progressive rock music scene out of nowhere in 2002, Jean-Pierre Schenk otherwise known asMetamorphosis has been treating us with regular symphonic prog recordings. His fourth CD entitled simply, Dark has now been released and it continues along many of the same musical paths already established but at the same time adds a few new elements to the Metamorphosis sound and style. This time around the music is performed by Schenk (vocals, keyboards, drums, bass), Olivier Guenat (guitar) and Roger Burri (guitar).

Dark features eight compositions, most of which are in the eight to nine minute range. This length seems to be Schenk’s favourite allowing him time to develop musical themes and insert many changes in time and tempo along with melodic musical change-ups. While the previous discs have betrayed a distinct Pink Floyd influence, that has lessened dramatically with the music on Dark. Each of the compositions will incorporate a number of musical motifs expertly joined together in classic prog fashion. Track one “Song for my Son” [8:27] displays a bit more aggression from the guitar than previously heard but then evolves into a classic Metamorphosis track. The second track “The Fight is Over” [7:53] alternates between a trance like vocal section repeating the title with a melodic mostly instrumental driving section setting up a strong contrast. Then “Hey Man” [9:58] begins with a kind of Porcupine Tree sound, plaintive and atmospheric before launching into the louder guitar driven section at the 1:30 mark. And just like this songs on Dark will go from hauntingly moody to grand and majestic symphonic masterpieces.

This forth release from Metamorphosis builds on the previous three releases in terms of musicianship as well as compositional style. Dark is well worth checking out if you enjoy a mix of mid-period Genesis, some Pink Floyd and a bit of Porcupine Tree. Not that any of these sound-styles detracts or stands out on its own; rather it’s the blending of these elements that makes the music of Metamorphosis unique in its own right. If you’re unfamiliar with the band, this is as good a place to start as anywhere. You can always work your back through the previous releases. Fans of symphonic-melodic prog will not be disappointed.
