Review:

Russian romantic rockers Sea of Despair feature no less that four luscious luvlies for your delight, semi operatic vocalist Yulia Vashkevich, bassist Alla Poverennova and keyboarders Krista Stelmakhovich and Elena Cherepanova. The only way I can describe their style is imagine if Ritchie Blackmore started listening to Within Temptation and then created a band called ‘Within Rainbow’ or ‘Deep Temptation’. Most songs feature Yulia dueting with Evgeniy Kosterin who has a decent rock voice without the normal heavy rock screaming. The lyrics are in Russian, but I have used the English translations for ease of reading. Highlights include the swaying ‘Ghostlight’, the swinging boogie title track ‘Moonlight’, the more symphonic ‘Angel of Sadness’, the two catchy rockers ‘Bound by Fire’ and bonus track ‘Koska’, and the bouncing ‘As Dark Skies’ (live video on Female Voices blog). Although they have two keyboarders, the songs are mainly driven by heavy rock guitars, with the keys used as ornamentation. You will have to create a new section in your collection entitled ‘Romantic Heavy Rock’ for this one. To find out more you can sail over a sea of despair to their rather attractive Myspace http://www.myspace.com/seaofdespairmetalto , a romantic rocking 8.5 out of 10.
