Dream Theater alum Derek Sherinian continues to create
unique instrumental albums of prog metal with his latest
album “Molecular Heinosity”. Keyboardist Sherinian works
in synch with guitarist Zakk Wylde on the album creating
a tasty, unique blend of prog metal that salutes both men’s
influences (Randy Coven, Joe Satriani among others) but
also continues to mine a rich vein of unique music that
few others have truly attempted. ***
What’s fascinating is how much 70’s and 80’s jazz fusion
like Weather Report and Return to Forever are very clear
influences on Sherinian’s approach to his instrument and
style. Sherinian and Wylde try something new as well—VOCALS.
The last track “So Far Gone” recalls Black Sabbath when
Ozzy was the front man. It’s an interesting departure from
the formula that has dominated many of their other albums.

The instrumental interplay is terrific throughout.
I could easily imagine these two playing on separate continents
at the same time without hearing each other and STILL being
in synch. My only complaint is that the album clocks in
a bit short at 39 minutes when it probably could have carried
on for another track or two. ---
Sound: “Molecular Heinosity” sounds pretty good with
a nice mix. There’s a bit of head room with in regards to
dynamic range and compression is minimal throughout the
CD. The recording sounds surprisingly warm throughout as
well. ---
Final Words: These two talented players try something
a bit new on their latest collaboration. “Molecular Heinosity”
demonstrates that these two talented players continue to
try new things and including an affectionate homage (and
parody) of Ozzy Osbourne’s vocal delivery during Black Sabbath’s
heyday with the singer.
