He is an unsung guitar hero, having played for Kip Winger
and countless others in the metal and even fusion field, but
as a solo artists, the listener is able to focus on his fluid
playing alone, rather than being a sideman. With 'Resolution,'
his phrasing and technique of shredding is played out in a
fashion where a singer would often vocalize, providing a different
kind of 'voice' if you must to instrumental recordings. ***
Although Timmons has his own stamp of playing, 'Resolution'
sounds a bit like some of the early Satriani material, the
production is dry and instrumentation is kept to a minimum,
meaning, guitar, bass, and drums with hardly any overdubbing
if any at all, making the record sound 'live' but yet tight
where there is this high spark for a subdued spontaneous performance;
subdued as in being 'song oriented' rather than a series of
jam sessions. **
Tracks such as the Start laden blues of "Ghost of You,"
the metallic groove with "Deliver Us," the hard driving "Move
On," and the emotional balladry of "Prayer/The Answer" exposes
Timmons' versatility as a player. The strengths of the record
lie within the scope of the stripped down approach really
showing that there is no need for neo-classical or overtly
progressive arrangements; 'Resolution' shows that Timmons
is a player that can stand, where the only fancy footwork
(or should I say 'handwork) needed is between him and his
axe.
