Pop laden AOR is really making a comeback, but no, (unfortunately)
I don't mean that as far as it's popularity is concerned (at
least in the US); but better yet, it seems like there are
more stronger releases coming from this genre (as well as
melodic metal/rock in general) than many other, which of course
includes mainstream rock, metal as well as other underground
genres. It's the simple fact that there are a lot of great
songwriters out there is something about a hook and a catchy
melody that captivates the listener.
Take for instance the latest release from Vertigo, which
features Joseph Williams (Toto, singing voice of "Simba" in
Disney's The Lion King, among others) axeman Alex Masi, skinsman
Virgil Donati, and bassist/keyboardist Fabrizio V.Zee Grossi,
for which the band itself, might constitute a metal band,
however, the sound pertains to the melodic rock scheme of
things for which the band really puts some powerful energy
into this sophomore release.
Sporting the gusto of Journey and the pop prowess of
Toto & Last Autumn's Dream, 2 has its share of moments with
straightforward upbeat tracks like "In the Blink of an Eye,"
"Together," and the rockin' "I Wanna Live Forever." Balladry
such as "Save it All for Me" and "Holy" round out the record's
diversity for material. There is one tracks that certainly
stands out, "Hold Me" with it's driving bassline and catchy
chorus is one of the biggest forces on the record.
Not only does 2 prove that the musicianship of the guys
on the record is versatile, but Williams himself continue
on the path of his father (notable film score composer John
Williams), being able to write some excellent material.
